A New York Dutch interior for the American Wing

Pl. IV. Red earthenware hearth tile, c. 1751, and shared of a blue-and-white tile, possibly Rotterdam, Netherlands, 1740-1760, discovered under and behind a later firebox and chimney installed about 1800. The New Testament scripture partially indicated on the blue-and-white tile is John: 20, which relates the story of doubting Thomas. Dutch biblical tiles along with bibles and prayer books printed in the Netherlands played an important role in educating children in the Dutch cultural areas of colonial New York and New Jersey.
