Pl. VII. Portrait of Adam Winne (1724-1808), attributed to Pieter Vanderlyn (c. 1687-1778), 1730. Inscribed "Adam Winne/Ae1730-" at lower right. Oil on canvas, 32 by 26 1/2 inches. In the background is a landscape perhaps depicting Vloman Kill and the Helderberg Mountains. Fruit was a favorite symbol in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch children's portraiture, standing for the Dutch motto "Tucht baert vrucht" (discipline bears fruit).
