In the background is a landscape perhaps depicting Vloman Kill and the Helderberg Mountains. Fruit was a favorite symbol in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch children's portraiture, standing for the Dutch motto "Tucht baert vrucht" (discipline bears fruit).
